High-res
Fighters & Finishers
Yesterday I completed by first half marathon as a way to raise money for Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
Despite pouring rain, 6,000 women showed up to race yesterday in Central Park. I was decked in rain gear and ready to go but as I walked into the park I was caught off guard. Strolling in at West 66th Street I started to cry, just broke into big sloppy tears.
Now those who know me, know that I’m not known to cry very often. I was overwhelmed by the joy of being alive. I thought about my cousin Michael, who died at the age of 12 from cancer. He is the reason I decided to run with TNT. The feeling of rain on my skin, the big drops of water falling from the trees, the smell of wet grass, the beauty of Sheep’s Meadow empty in the morning, these were all the things I could enjoy that he would never know. It broke my heart to think of how much living he had left before he passed away. I was humbled but happy that I decided to run to raise money of LLS. I am able to live life, challenge my body, challenge myself. It’s the least I can do to open up the opportunity for more people to give money an amazing organization, Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, that helps fight a diseases that cuts life short for so many.
I was revived at the enthusiasm of the other runners. I was especially touched when I saw a woman with a T-shirt that read “I am a Cancer survivor. I’ve been through brain surgery, chemotherapy and radiation. I am a fighter. I am a finisher.”
Inspired and humbled, I ran faster and couldn’t help but smile and cheer with each new mile. I was in good company among thousands of other women with their own reasons and their own motivations. They helped inspire me to a finish 8 minutes faster than my goal. I hope my race can help more people to be fighters, finishers- survivors.
Please help me reach my $2,900 donation goal for Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Visit my fundraising page here: Britty Runs The City .
Also, come support my cause this Thursday April 29th at Forum on 4th Avenue between 12th and 13th Street in NYC. Happy Hour starts at 6pm and a portion of all proceeds will benefit Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
